WOC Tour – the terrains for 7th–12th July 2025
The best competition terrains in the Kuopio area have been embargoed, waiting for orienteers for years. In July 2025, the wait will finally be over.
7.7.2025 Nilsiä
The terrain in Nilsiä’s town center is relatively flat, with no major elevation changes. The area includes public buildings and small apartment buildings, making navigation fairly easy. However, the orienteering course can be surprising due to the pace and the creativity of the course setters. Nilsiä village provides a pleasant and fast-paced start to the orienteering week. Did you know that Nilsiä was a training area for WOC orienteers preparing for WOC 2013?
8.-9.7.2025 Tahko
Tahko’s orienteering terrain is located around the ski resort area, where the highest point of Tahkomäki rises 201 meters above the lake’s surface. The terrain is partly detailed, with vegetation ranging from open ski slopes to old forests with deciduous trees, spruces, and pines. The elevation changes add a physical challenge to the orienteering, making movement more difficult. However, course setters have taken this into account when selecting the terrain, ensuring good runnability for the most part, with poor sections being avoidable through careful route planning. The area near the arena has a dense network of trails and paths, which especially helps the youngest participants.
11.7.2025 Neulaniemi
Neulaniemi’s terrain is characterized by high rocky hills. The forests are mostly managed forests, but they have not been logged in the last 30 years, and the oldest forests are over 100 years old. The terrain is mainly dominated by coniferous trees, with spruces and pines being the most common. The runnability varies from good to more challenging. Visibility ranges from good to excellent, but smaller features in the landscape can slow down the orienteering speed.
12.7.2025 Puijo
On Puijo, it’s important to respect the small details of the terrain. The area’s forests are old, consisting of deciduous trees, pines, and spruces. The runnability is mostly good, but the elevation changes present a challenge for speed enthusiasts. Visibility is mostly good. Puijo is located in the heart of Kuopio and is a popular recreational area.
